Monywa
Monywa is the commercial centre of Indian border trade and Chindwin valley situated about 136 km north-west of Mandalay and on the eastern bank of Chindwin River. On the other side of Chindwin River lies Pho Win Mountain Cave, where contain Buddhist statues and murals daring back to 17th, 18th centuries. There are dozens of large and small caves in the area filled with over 400000 old Buddha images. There is another Shwe Ba Hill just beyond Pho Win Hill which features unique pavilions cut from the surrounding sandstones and filled with plain Buddha images.
Places of attraction are Bodhi-ta-htaung (One Thousand Bo trees), Moe Hnyin Thanbuddae temple where 555555 Buddha images are housed. Alantaya Buddha Reclining Image, biggest reclining image, Ledi Kyaung-taik, a teaching monastery where Buddhist Scriptures are inscribed on 806 stone slabs; and Kyaukka village, known for its distinctive kind of lacquer-wear. Monywa is the capital city of Sagaing Division.
