Mt. Popa
Mount Popa is the unique oasis in the semi-desert region of central Myanmar. It is an extinct volcano over 15,000 meter high rising out of plains and located some 50 Km Southeast of Bagan. It is famed as the abode of Mahagiri Nats or spirit gods to whom the Kings of Bagan paid annual homage and their shrines can be seen at a nearby rocky crag. The name Popa comes from the word Sanskrit that means Flowers. Summit of the mount is occupied by pagodas and religious pavilions. The hill sides are fertile due to volcanic ashes and thus there are various kinds of trees and flowers growing naturally. At the foot of the mountain there is a pavilion which houses the life sized statues of 37 nats or spirits equipped with their respective colorful costumes. It is also a popular holy place due to a religious patronage. Big Yearly feast of Nats takes place there at the month of Nadaw (month of November and December). Mount Popa has been designated as a national park, a perfect place for eco-tourism and trekking. One can reach Mt. Popa road via Kyaukpadaung and Nyaung U - Popa road.
