Myeik Archipelago
It is one of the geographical beauties of Myanmar with many treasures in the depths existing beneath the archipelago water to this day. Myeik Archipelago comprises over 500 gorgeous islands covering area of about 10,000 sq. miles. Lumpi island is located at latitude 10’ 5” North and Longitude 98’ East and it is about 31 miles long and 7 miles wide with a total area of 79 sq. miles. It can be reached from Myeik about 90 nautical miles southwest, 30 miles West from Bokepyin and 60 miles Northwest from Kawthaung.
This untouched beautiful islands and surrounding seas alive with amazing diversity of wildlife, flora and fauna. Parrots, hornbills, sea eagles and herons fill the skies. On land, there are monkeys, wild cattle, elephants, deer, wild pigs, crocodiles, tigers and rhinoceros. The only human in habitants in this area are the sea gypsies, Salone live on boats during the dry season and remain on land during the rainy season. Their ways of life is very simple with unique customs, characters and traditions. For generations, they are still depending on fishing and boat building.
Lumpi Island offers a great variety of scenery and wildlife, ever green forest, beach and dune forests, tidal mangroves and beaches with coral formation. The surrounding waters are rich in birdlife, fish marine, mammals (dolphins) and marine turtles. Lumpi Island, the groups of surrounding islands, expansive beaches of high quality sand and offshore corals make the area as a nature reserve and attractive place for marine tourism.
