Meditating in Burma
One month tourist visas are now available for Burma (now known as Myanmar).
There are five meditation centres in Rangoon (Yangon) that cater very generously
for foreign meditators, locally called yogis. They are mostly intensive Insight
(Vipassana) Meditation centres in the Mahasi Sayadaw tradition. If you wish
to practice for more than a month you will need to arrange a special meditation
visa from the meditation centre beforehand. All the centres listed below have
an ongoing meditation schedule, so you can go there at any time of the year.
If you wish to practice with the main teachers it is best to go there during
the 'Rain's Retreat' (Vassa) between July and October.
Shweumin meditation centre
This modern meditation center built on over 6 acres of land, a vision of Shwe Oo Min Sayadaw,
was constructed by the generous donations of many. The first hall was completed in February
1999 with many additional buildings being added through 2004. Far from traffic and people,
in the shade of the forest rests this center, a place to live in the joy of the Dhamma.
Mahasi meditation centre
It has been ten years since our little Meditation Centre in Billinge
was established, supported by your Goodwill and Generosity. During
that period, many Yogis have practised Satipatthana Vipassana
Meditation, participating in many of the long, short , or weekend
Retreats. Nearer the end of his Dhamma Dhuta trip to Europe, our
Ovadacariya Sayadawgyi U Panditar Bhi Vamsa will be conducting a
Meditation Retreat at Wakefield from 25th June to 2nd July, 2000.
